WEST opens in just a few days, (5 days to be exact, but is anyone else counting as closely as we are?!) + it’s been all about unpacking + tagging + organizing + pricing + prepping at HQ of late. But, want to shout out - hyper local here – we’re carrying a line by Staples High School junior (+ fashionista) Emerson Kobak. She’s just that good.
Kobak’s line, Emerson Isa Designs, has a very pro style. No wonder, considering that she has been going into NYC every Saturday (thanks Dan Woog for bringing her to our attention) for the past three years to study drawing and sewing at FIT. She spent the summer at Cornell University’s fashion design program. It is just pretty cool.
So, while we’re all about bringing that West vibe east, we didn’t have to go far for this one.
So now you know our story (we told you our secrets) + we know we said LA, as in our retail concept is all about Los Angeles style and that is true. But its also about the vibe that informs LA style - the vibe of #surfsunsand. The vibe of #calmcoolandcollected. Not overly planned. Super-effortless, super-appealing, super-confident. Fashion. Elegant + easy, sometimes beachy but not messy. Cool + accessible. Designers like: The Perfext, RtA, Artisan Deluxe + Frame. Looks to love.
But when we planned our buys, we didn’t stop at the WEST coast. Australian fashion is having a, how shall we say it - moment. It has got the vibe of Cali but with a spin. Designers there are doing causal easily, but there’s tailoring too. Maybe it’s the European influence, maybe it’s the unbelievable beauty of that country (they adore their view, so they love to tailor?) but it is inspiring us. When we open, look for Sass & Bide, Camilla and Marc, C/MEO Collective, Keepsake + Finders Keepers.
We call ourselves WEST and we do skew that way. But borders don't mean too much to us. Hurry up August 15th. Our opening date. We've got some fashion to share.
I took a job in 1991. In LA. I'd grown up on Long Island but I landed in what looked like Melrose Place to me. Yes, the TV show. I found an all-white, bright, perfect apartment + commuted, along Sunset Blvd, from Brentwood to Hollywood, every day. As I look back, I think the sun was shining every single day too. I loved the casual lifestyle -- the high/low mix -- in fashion, in culture, in fun and in business.
Fast forward- I am in NYC, it's 2002. I am married, with 2 kids and looking around for a good suburb we can move to, to raise our family. After looking at nearly every town between Manhattan and pretty much everywhere, we found Westport, CT. A lot here reminded me of Southern California: I met cool people. Everyone seemed to be from somewhere, doing something intriguing + I connected with the rich arts heritage in Westport. The playground was on the sand (extra points), in sight of the beautiful coastline + downtown felt like Brentwood. I felt I could re-create a little of my special LA life here.
And so I did. We moved to Westport and in August 2016, I will take it a step further, when I open WEST, at 117 Post Road, East. My life-long love for style + fashion+ art + music will meet at WEST -- a casual, cool, easy place to shop for the essentials, the non-essentials + everything in-between. I have scoured brands, designers, artists and makers from all points WEST to bring to you. When I am in LA I breathe differently. I want to share with you the west coast vibe + I look forward to knowing you and having you head WEST, #SurfSunSand, LM
PS SUCH huge thanks to A for love, J, S + M for laughter + hugs, Mama for cheering, my friends, for well, everything + you for coming WEST with me.
